# Calls

Voice and video calls with the people you chat with: how to call and answer, who can call you, how to turn calls off, and what keeps them private. In the web app now; in the iPhone and Android apps fr

You can call the people you chat with, by voice or with video. Calls are free on every plan.

**Where calls work.** In the web app at [app.langx.io](https://app.langx.io) since 5 October 2026. In the iPhone and Android apps from **version 2.9**, which is not in the stores yet — until you have it, the phone apps cannot make or take calls.
{% endhint %}

## Making a call

Open a chat and tap the call button at the top of it. A small menu offers **Voice call** or **Video call**.

A call rings for 45 seconds. If nobody answers, it is a missed call. While it is still ringing you can **Cancel** it.

## Answering a call

An incoming call shows the caller's name and picture, with **Answer** and **Decline**.

When a video call rings, you can choose **Answer without camera** and talk by voice only.

## During a call

* **Mute** / **Unmute** your microphone.
* **Speaker**, to switch between the earpiece and the loudspeaker.
* **Turn camera off** / **Turn camera on**.
* **Switch camera**, between the front and the back camera.
* **Hang up**.

A call can last up to **2 hours**.

## Who can call whom

The same rule as sending photos: **you can call someone once they have sent you 5 messages.** No plan skips this — it is about the other person having talked to you first, not about paying.

Nobody can call or be called:

* while either of you has blocked the other,
* while either account is suspended,
* on an official account such as **@langx**,
* with a guest account.

There are also limits that stop calls being used to pester someone. If several of your calls to the same person go unanswered, you have to wait before you can call them again — a message or a call back from them lifts it straight away.

## Turning calls off

**Settings → Privacy → Allow calls.** It is on unless you turn it off. With it off, nobody can call you, and you cannot call anyone — a switch that only blocked incoming calls would let you ring people who cannot ring you back.

## Privacy and safety

* **Device to device, encrypted.** The sound and picture travel between the two devices, encrypted, through a relay. Neither of you sees the other's IP address.
* **Nothing is recorded.** LangX has no copy of any call, so there is nothing for us to keep, hand over or listen to.
* **Blocking ends a call.** If you block someone while you are on a call with them, the call ends.
* **Calls can be reported.** A finished call leaves a row in the chat; that row has **Report**, the same as a message.

## How a call reaches you

**In the web app,** a call rings while LangX is open in a browser tab. With no tab open, it cannot ring; you will see it as a missed call afterwards.

**On iPhone and Android, from version 2.9,** a call rings like an ordinary phone call, even when the app is closed:

* **iPhone** — on the system's own incoming-call screen, with your ringtone, and you can answer or decline from the lock screen. In mainland China, where that screen is not available to apps, the call arrives as an ordinary notification instead; tap it to open the chat.
* **Android** — as a full-screen incoming call, over the lock screen where your phone allows it.

## In the chat afterwards

Every call leaves a row in the conversation — for example *Outgoing voice call 3:12*, *Missed video call* or *Declined* — with the option to call back. A missed call shows up like an unread message and notifies you the way a new message does (**Settings → Notifications → Messages**).

Calls do not earn tokens, and a call is not one of the things that counts as practising for a streak bonus. Messages and corrections are; see [How Tokens Are Earned](/docs/token/distibution.md) and [Day Streaks](/docs/library/day-streaks.md).

## An agreed time to talk

If you and your partner agreed a time with **Propose a time**, the card in the chat shows **Call now** from 10 minutes before that time, in the web app.
